Starting from Scratch

To create a new image, use the main panel "File -> New" menu item. This will create a new blank image 256 pixels square with a white background - if you haven't changed the defaults. But let's make something a bit bigger: change the settings to 400x400 pixels. See the dialogue box below:

The steps we're going to move through now aren't going to create an image worth keeping: this is to demonstrate some of what the drawing tools in the GIMP can do. I'd recommend following the steps I lay out as we move along: a little dull, but there's a reason for the structure.
